Stellar Edge - Modern History of Humanity 1st Solar War (2090)
1st Solar War (2090)
In 2090, Earth was plunged into the devastating 1st Solar War. The weaponization of space and fierce competition for helium-3, a valuable resource for fusion energy, led to heightened tensions and conflict. The collapse of terrestrial economies, exacerbated by the abundance of orbital resources competing with terrestrial value chains, and social disruption due to tensions between settlements in the solar system and terrestrial governments claiming authority over them, contributed to a global crisis. Governments collapsed as complex alliances for mutual defence spiralled into war, dragging multiple nations into uncontrollable conflict. This war resulted in the collapse of most governments and the end of legacy world organizations such as the United Nations, NATO, BRICS, and others. The economic power of the dollar as the global reserve currency was undermined, leading to significant civil and political disruption in major global powers. This turmoil paved the way for the collapse and reformation of many nations.
Second Reformation (2099-2142)
From 2099 to 2142, the world experienced the Second Reformation, a period marked by the rebuilding of civil society. While there was tension and the possibility of conflict, nations focused on reconstruction. Significant technological progress occurred due to military advances developed during the war now being applied to civilian uses. Western and Eurasian countries, despite suffering significant damage and political collapse, retained enough infrastructure and population to form coherent political organizations. This led to the emergence of the Western Coalition for Security and Progress (WCSP), the Eurasian Confederation and several other significant new political factions all possessing high levels of economic, cultural and technological development that arose for previously disadvantaged territories.
Development of Spacecraft for Alpha Centauri (2143-2198)
In 2143, humanity launched its first colonization ship towards Alpha Centauri, followed by eight more in 2146. These spacecraft were equipped with advanced fusion engines and sophisticated magnetic shielding, enabling them to survive the decades-long journey through interstellar space. Peaceful colonization rapidly deteriorated with the discovery of Beariliumite in 2198, initial excitement at a massive technological breakthrough gave way to concerns over who would control access. This material offered huge technological opportunities, enabling more powerful power generation, improved computing capacity leading to advanced AI, and significant military applications. Failure to secure access to Beariliumite posed a huge economic and strategic disadvantage. However, supplies were extremely limited and difficult to extract, sparking intense conflict. Attempts at diplomatic and negotiated access to Beariliumite failed when it became apparent that there was insufficient supply, the situation deteriorated to armed conflict.
1st Alpha Centauri Conflict and Interstellar War (2198-2210)
In 2198, nations and corporations escalated in open warfare for control of Beariliumite. Alpha Centauri was still dependent on supply, support and logistics from Earth and attempts to cut rival supply chains ignited into the first Interstellar War by 2200. The war led to massive loss of life, infrastructure devastation, and the collapse of major alliances like the WCSP and Eurasian Confederation.
Technological Renaissance and Third Reformation (2210-2235)
Emerging from the rubble of the first Interstellar War, humanity achieved significant technological advancements, including the development of Gate Technology by Hermez Technologies in 2210. Beariliumite played a crucial role in these advancements, revolutionizing manufacturing, military technology, AI, communications, and logistics. The Third Reformation from 2211 to 2235 saw the political landscape transform. New major alliances emerged, including the Alliance of Democratic Nations (ADN) and the Federated Sovereign Republics (FSR). The formation of the Stellar Gate Administration (SGA) was a result of brilliant political manoeuvring by the scientific community, which leveraged their discovery of gate technology to create an independent organization controlling the technology. The SGA established accords for access to the gate system, treating all parties equally unless they engaged in armed conflict or illegal activity in the Sol system.
The Interstellar Banking System (IBS) grew out of existing financial and banking institutions such as the Bank for International Settlements, IMF, and World Bank, seeking to finance expansion and drive stability through economic cooperation. The IBS became a powerful institution capable of sanctioning or funding nations, alliances, and corporations. It held huge leverage in trade and mining rights for Beariliumite.
At the same time, an international Civilian Administration emerged to administer, negotiate, register, and adjudicate colonization and mining rights in the new star systems. Based in Sol, this entity was called the Administration for Economic Survey and Colonization Cooperation (AESCC).
The promise of Gate Technology and the emergence of the SGA, IBS and AESCC leads to stability and peace despite still simmering rivalries between all major powers. While the 1st Interstellar War is over, old grudges are not forgotten, there is more to be gained by cooperating with the newly emergent institutions.
The Age of Gates and Jump Technology (2236-2268)
The first gate to Alpha Centauri became operational in 2236. The discovery of Wigglonium in 2243 and the hypothesis of Jump Tech in 2244 led to the testing of the first Jump Ship in 2264. By 2268, the Sol System was designated a neutral territory, becoming an administrative hub for alliances, nations, and corporations. The SGA and IBS maintained tight control over gate and Jump Ship technology.
Mass Migration and Cold Star War (2269-2286)
From 2269 to 2284, there was a significant drop in Sol's population due to mass migration to new colonies, presenting huge opportunities for organizations and individuals alike. Earth largely became a corporate and governance hub, similar to Brussels, retaining an intellectual and corporate elite due to the security provided. Sol remained largely self-sufficient except for a dependency on Beariliumite from colonies. In 2286, the Cold Star War began, with factions rushing to claim systems, technology, and resources. The use of corporate PMCs for low-level conflicts became common to avoid sanctions from the IBS and restricted gate access from the SGA. All factions continue to attempt to infiltrate the SGA as well as manipulate the IBS and AESCC.
The Modern Era (2287-Present)
By the late 23rd century, a tense and fragile peace was maintained by the interdependence of major factions on the IBS for financial services and the SGA for Gate access. The ADN and FSR emerged as powerful entities, with other significant alliances including the Bharat Republic, Chinese Union, United Andean Confederation, Ubuntu Republic, Maghreb Union, Takaful Republic, and the Independent Peoples Alliances. Each faction, comprised of numerous corporations and nation-states, continues to navigate the complex internal and external political landscape of interstellar colonization and technological advancement.
War seems inevitable, each faction musters its strength, hones its weapons, secures territory and resources and jealously guard their borders.
This intricate history sets the stage for your tabletop sci-fi wargame, where alliances are fragile, technology is a powerful tool, and the struggle for resources and power continues across the stars.
